it can decrease blood flow to the optic nerve of the eye, causing sudden vision loss. This has occurred in a small number of people taking sildenafil, most of whom also had heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or certain pre-existing eye problems, and in those who smoked or were over 50 years old. It is not clear whether sildenafil is the actual cause of vision loss.

How long does Viagra last and how soon does it work?
It takes from 30 minutes to 1 hour for Viagra (sildenafil) to start working, and the effects will last for about 4 hours. It is used to treat erectile dysfunction.
Hardness and duration of erections increase with increased dose. Viagra is given as an oral pill, so it has to be absorbed from your stomach to get into your blood and reach your penis. Studies show that Viagra is rapidly absorbed. It reaches its highest blood level between 30 and 120 minutes after taking it. After 4 hours, half of the Viagra has been broken down by the liver. It continues to decrease over the next 20 hours.
Viagra may take longer to work if you take it after a fatty meal because fat slows down absorption in your stomach. Men over age 65 and men with liver disease or severe kidney disease may have longer effects from Viagra, and the dose may need to be lower.
Viagra works by increasing smooth muscle relaxation in the part of the penis called the corpus cavernosum. When the penis is stimulated, a substance called nitric oxide is released. In a series of steps, nitric oxide is turned into a substance called cGMP. This substance causes smooth muscle relaxation that allows more blood to flow into your penis. Viagra inhibits the breakdown of cGMP, which makes an erection harder and longer lasting. Since this process only starts with stimulation of the penis and the release of nitric oxide, Viagra will not give you an erection without your penis also being stimulated.
Viagra can make your penis stay erect longer, but it may not make you last longer. The time to orgasm and ejaculation may not change. Men with early ejaculation or premature ejaculation may not be helped by Viagra. The American Urological Association does not recommend Viagra as a treatment for premature ejaculation.
Erectile dysfunction has many causes. Viagra is not a cure. It does not increase your desire for sex. The most common cause of erectile dysfunction is decreased blood supply to the penis, which may be a warning of decreased blood supply to other parts of your body. Your doctor may check you for high blood pressure, heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
Erectile dysfunction can also be caused by depression, anxiety and drug or alcohol abuse. Your doctor may help you manage these problems before or in addition to prescribing Viagra.
Can you take Viagra with high blood pressure?
You can take Viagra (sildenafil) if you have high blood pressure that is controlled by blood pressure medications. Viagra (sildenafil) works by blocking an enzyme called PDE-5, which, in turn, prevents the break down of another substance called cGMP, which causes smooth muscle to relax and dilate. This allows more blood to flow to the penis and also causes blood vessels around the heart to open wider. This effect is called vasodilation, and it lowers blood pressure.
Viagra is used to treat erectile dysfunction in men. You should tell your doctor if you have high or low blood pressure before starting Viagra.
Caution is warranted in some cases:
- If you take Viagra with a blood pressure medication that also works by lowering blood pressure through vasodilation, your blood pressure could drop low enough to make you dizzy or make you pass out
- Taking Viagra with a blood pressure or prostate medication called an alpha blocker can be dangerous. If you take an alpha blocker and you need Viagra, your doctor may need to lower the dose of the alpha blocker or lower the dose of Viagra
- Another type of drug that lowers blood pressure is a nitrate drug. Nitrate drugs are used in people with heart disease to relieve chest pain called angina. You should not use Viagra if you use a nitrate drug. This can also lead to a dangerous drop in blood pressure.
Blood pressure is measured in units called millimeters of mercury (mmHg). The higher number in a blood pressure measurement is the pressure in your arteries when your heart pumps, called the systolic pressure. The lower number is the pressure between heartbeats, called the diastolic pressure. Studies in healthy volunteers show that a single dose of Viagra lowers systolic blood pressure by about 8 mmHg and diastolic pressure by about 5 mmHg.
You should tell your doctor if you have high or low blood pressure before starting Viagra. You should also tell your doctor about all the medications or supplements you take. If you take a medication or supplement that lowers blood pressure along with Viagra , it may drop your blood pressure too much, which could make you dizzy or fall over. This is called hypotension.
Can women take Viagra?
Viagra (sildenafil) is approved to treat sexual dysfunction in women by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), but it is sometimes prescribed to women off-label, which means without approval by the FDA. Viagra is an effective drug for treating male erectile dysfunction, but it targets sexual performance, not sexual arousal. There is limited evidence that Viagra may be beneficial for women with sexual dysfunction, but the trials have been small and the results inconsistent.
In men, Viagra works by relaxing smooth muscle in the penis. This allows blood to flow into the penis which causes an erection.
In women, Viagra can increase blood flow to the clitoris and the labia of the vagina which may increase lubrication and sensation. This may help some women with sexual arousal and orgasm, especially in women after menopause with vaginal dryness. There have been only a few studies on the use of Viagra in women with sexual dysfunction. The results of these studies have not shown consistent benefits.
Viagra also has side effects, including:
- Headache
- Nasal congestion
- Nausea
- Visual disturbances.
According to the FDA, the safety of Viagra for women during pregnancy or breastfeeding has not been studied in humans. Viagra does pass into breast milk, and it is not known if it has any effects on breastfed babies.
Note that sildenafil, the active ingredient of Viagra, is also available as Revatio, which may be used to treat pulmonary hypertension in both men and women, albeit at a much smaller dose.
FSIAD
The most common sexual disorder in women is called female sexual interest and arousal disorder (FSIAD). Viagra has not proven to be helpful for this condition because FSIAD is more complex than erectile dysfunction in men. FSIAD can be diagnosed if a woman has reduced or lost her interest in sex, has reduced or lost desire, arousal, response or pleasure. These symptoms should be present for at least 6 months and not be caused by relationship problems, medications, substance abuse, stress or another medical condition.
To be considered FSIAD, the sexual dysfunction must be causing a woman a significant amount of distress. Low sexual desire is found in about 20% to 30% of women, but only about half of these women experience significant distress. FSIAD is most common in women who are in a relationship and would like to be more sexually active and responsive. Lack of interest in sex itself is not abnormal, especially in women who do not want to be in a relationship or who have lost interest in sex at older ages.
Addyi
There is one drug that has been approved by the FDA to treat women with low sexual desire. The name of the drug is Addyi (flibanserin). It was approved in 2015 for women before menopause.
It is not known how this drug works. It was developed as an antidepressant. Studies show that Addyi causes a small but significant increase in monthly satisfying sexual events compared to a placebo (about 1 to 2 more events).
It comes with significant side effects, and it must be taken every day. The side effects include:
- Dizziness
- Sleepiness
- Fatigue
- Insomnia
- Dry mouth
- Nausea
The drug is taken at bedtime to avoid these side effects during the day.
The FDA says women should stop taking Addyi if they do not have improvement in sexual desire after 8 weeks.
In 2019, the FDA issued a warning that alcohol must be avoided in women taking Addyi. Addyi taken with alcohol can cause a severe drop in blood pressure, which may cause syncope (passing out). The warning about alcohol and Addyi is a boxed warning. That means the warning must appear in a box at the top of the drug insert. A boxed warning is the highest warning given by the FDA.
Can I buy generic Viagra online?
Viagra online is a popular erectile dysfunction (ED) drug, and many people prefer to buy it online. Buying Viagra online is easy, doesn’t involve a trip to the pharmacy, and is affordable, but it’s important to do it safely. Sildenafil, the generic name for Viagra, was approved by the FDA in 2016.
Viagra is also one of the most counterfeited drugs in the world. Counterfeit (fake) drugs are often smuggled into the U.S.A and may contain poisons, other dangerous medicines, or maybe even no medicine at all. You won’t know who made the medicine, where it came from, or what’s inside. Internet fraud has been linked to online purchases of counterfeit Viagra due to its popularity, famous name, and more confidential way of buying.

Buying drugs online can be a risky endeavor if not done properly. Testing done by Pfizer revealed some tainted products contained toxins such as blue printer ink, drywall, and dangerous illicit drugs such as amphetamines (“speed”).
How do you safely buy Viagra online?
If you just go to the Internet and search for “Viagra for sale” online, you may run into trouble. While the FDA has done a good job of tracking down and eliminating fraudulent online websites, new ones pop up all the time.
The safest way to buy Viagra or its generic is to get a prescription from your doctor or other healthcare provider. You can even do this over a telehealth call in many cases, although for your first prescription your doctor may want to examine you. It is common for prescriptions to be shipped in the U.k., so none of this should pose any complications.
If you have insurance, check the covered drugs for your plan. Even if the Viagra brand name is not covered, the generics may be, and are very affordable if you have to pay the full cash price. On average, 30 sildenafil tablets run about $7.50 to $30 cash, using an online coupon. Prices can vary.
Pfizer, the manufacturer of Viagra, also offers a copay card for some patients with private insurance. This might save you 50% on up to 12 prescriptions – about $4,200 a year. You can access their contact information here.
Most U.S. insurance companies offer mail-order pharmacy for regular shipment of medications, and you can feel confident that your medicine will be safe.
How to tell if an online pharmacy is safe?
Viagra, its generic option, or any other erectile dysfunction (ED) drug requires a valid prescription from a healthcare provider in the U.K. If you access a website that is selling Viagra or sildenafil in the U.k. but does not require a prescription before shipment, it is most likely a fraudulent pharmacy.
Illegal online pharmacies can look very real on the Internet, so follow all of these tips:
- Check with the FDA BeSafeRx site and the National Boards of Pharmacy, which maintain lists of accredited digital pharmacies.
- If using an online pharmacy, make sure it has a legitimate U.k. street address, phone number, and registered pharmacist for contact. Be sure it is a secured website that starts with https:// (not http://) in its website address.
- Don’t buy drugs from sites that sell prescription medicines without a prescription. Watch out for drug prices that too good to be true, or seem excessively high.
- Look for the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy’s Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites, also known as the VIPPS Seal, on the website. Online pharmacies with this seal have met state licensure requirements, confidentiality, and other strict criteria criteria.
- For more information on buying an online medicine safely from the Internet, review these FDA tips.
Check Your Medicine
Any time you get a prescription refilled, check the color, texture, and shape of the medicine. If there is anything different, talk to your pharmacist. Never take or give anyone a medicine you suspect to be fraudulent or incorrect.
If you are getting a prescription filled for the first time, or you have been given a medicine that looks different, try the Drugs.com Pill Identifier to check its validity. You can match the imprint, size, shape, or color of your pill and read a detailed description in the drug information. Generic drugs can change shape, color, or imprint between manufacturers.
If you suspect you may be in possession of a counterfeit medicine, talk to your pharmacist for verification. If you think you’ve purchased counterfeit Viagra, or any other medicine, report it to the FDA MedWatch Program.
